2012 Winter Capsule Wardrobe Challenge?

It is almost a year since the 2011 Winter Capsule Wardobe Challenge.
Does anyone want to join up for the 2012 challenge.
This year I was planning on the week beginning Monday February 20th.

The rules are:

Choose ten items of clothing from your wardrobe and mix and match them for five days between Monday Feb 20th and Friday Feb 24th.
You can have any combination of shoes, dresses, skirts, tops and jackets as long as it adds up to ten individual items.
You are also allowed five accessories which include jewellery, scarves, bag, belts etc.
Underwear and hosiery do not come under the ten items and five accessories!

Weekend Buys

I met up with some friends in Cafe Nero on Saturday.
It was a lovely day and as the village is only five minutes away on my bike I decided to cylcle in.
I was a little early so had a mooch around the charity shops.
I picked up this lovely Vila Skirt from Oxfam for 99p.

I also found this fabulous Hobbs skirt for £4.49 in the Claire House Charity Shop.

It was a size 8 and I am a 10, but as Hobbs is quite a generous brand I decided to take a risk..
I am so glad I did as it is a perfect fit.

My new cardigan from Boden also arrived today.
I had sent back a blouse I had bought because the seam was coming undone and they gave me a full refund so with half the proceeds I bought the ruby spot version of this cardigan in the Boden sale for £27.50.
As I need to start saving for my daughter's school trip in 2013 I think this will be my last spree for a while.

It's been a sicky week for my family.
Monday, my son was ill.
Tuesday he was back in.
Wednesday my daughter was off and tonight I feel like taking to my bed.

I love the sleeves on this blouse.
I love the vibrant red.
It may be a bit dressy for work but I cannot resist this blouse on a cold and frosty morning.
Today was the College Careers Convention and it was very pleasing to see a whole sports hall filled with exhibitors, and even more pleasing to see students queuing up outside the door to get in.
When I was at sixth form college our careers advice consisted of a shelf of books in the library.
Our UCAS form, or UCCA form as it was called was handwritten and the personal statement consisted of one paragraph.
I was fortunate enough to get into my first choice university - Bangor University - where I studied a BA (Hons) English.
I graduated in 1988.
I often wonder what I would do if I was 18 again.

Week 4: Winesday

Wednesday is known as Winesday in our house.
The glorious midweek treat of a glass of red wine or two.
I have been so good.
Two wine free days already this week which makes my delicious treat even more enjoyable.
I pass a Waitrose on the way home from work and pop in for whatever wine they have on offer.
I have never had a bad bottle of wine from Waitrose.
I love that shop.
If only I could do my whole week's shop there.
Instead I settled for a couple of packs of marked down falafels and a bottle of Primitivo.

Another day.
After last night I wasn't sure I would feel so bright and cheerful today.
Another teenage tantrum over a confiscated mobile phone!
Wasn't life so much easier before mobile phones, home computers, X-boxes, laptops etc?
I could go on.
But then I would sound just like my mum about 30 years ago.
And If I need another reminder of sinking into middle age I need only look at my waistline.
Not that it is any miracle weight gain, just the combined effect of eating too much food, drinking too much red wine and moving far less than I used to.
I know what I need to do.
But where has my willpower gone?

Quirky

I had never really got to grips with finding words to describe my style as advised by Imogen.
However, this week my colleague and I were trawling through the staff photos to try and identify members of staff who we didn't yet know.
We came across a Sociology Teacher.
"I love her sense of style," I said.
My colleague laughed.
"You both dress in the same way that's why you like it. You both have a quirky sense of style."
So there it is.
Quirky.
At 45 I have finally found a word to describe my dress - quirky.

It was another busy week at college and after reading Lorena's blog about the step she has taken to help her move into a teaching career it made me realise how lucky I am.
I love working with 16-19-year-olds.
One of my students is totally blind.
He doesn't like the phrase "sight impaired."
He prefers to be called blind.
I spent two break times with him this week and he showed me the vast array of equipment he uses to enable him to work alongside sighted students on his Music Course.
I am totally in awe of him.

2012: Week Two

A busy week at college.
We finally completed the UCAS forms.
On top of my normal duties since October I have guided 40 students through their personal statements, written their references and checked their forms.
I pushed the final button on the final form today.
I have volunteered to take one of the Reading Groups in March and will be leading an hour long discussion on "The Yellow Wallpaper."
And today I had a meeting with the Head of English and from next term I will be running the college's creative writing group.
I feel tired but blessed to be doing such a wonderful job.

2012 marks my 5th year in the blogsphere which began in July 2008 with workthatwardrobe - my quest to spend a year without spending money on clothes.
The Small Fabric evolved from there and over the past few years I feel my style has developed.
I wish to continue blogging but I don't want this to be onerous.
Therefore I have decided to disable the comments section and just post my outfits.
I will continue to visit the blogs on my bloglist and keep in touch that way.
I look forward to a year of getting back into shape and developing my style.
The next post will start the stripped down version of my blog.

"I notice you have been wearing lots of red lately...it looks absolutely wonderful on you. Did you get your colours done or are you naturally gravitating to what suits you?" asked Jo, before adding that she was enjoying my red outfits.
I have to confess this was a happy accident.
I had worn red a couple of times in December and couldn't quite work out why some outfits seemed to make me look more alive and brighter while others drained the life out of me.
Then I looked back and noticed that all of my best pictures had one thing in common - I was wearing red.
So Christmas Day I made a conscious effort to wear red and then the next day and then the next day.
I can't say I will always wear red but red has certainly replaced pink in my "get up and give me a lift go - to colour."

Another lazy day followed by an evening out with friends.
During the day I dressed for comfort (watching films and a little gentle tidying) while in the evening I wanted to make more of an effort.
This annual Christmas evening out to our friends Kevin and Denise began way back in 2000 when our youngest son was just 9 months old.
Denise and I met at a toddler group before our eldest children had started school.
Today our two eldest children are both at university and the rest of our children are all at High School.
Nothing like Christmas to chart the passage of time.

Well after much angst here it is - my Christmas Day outfit.
All remixed and worn before.
The dress is at least three years old, as is the wrap.
I had a fabulous day and the outfit was perfect for the early morning Christmas present unwrap, the trip to the nursing home to see my mother in law, helping my husband to cook the dinner, games of Charades and Scattegories before collapsing on the sofa to watch AB Fab.

A very busy day today.
After walking the dog and spending an hour in the gym I took my daughter and niece into town to get their Christmas nails done.
While they were otherwise engaged I completed the Christmas shopping before coming home to cook, tidy and get ready for a few Christmas drinks with my old friends.
It was gone 1.30am when I finally got to bed.

The Christmas Day Outfit

What is your recipe for the perfect Christmas Day outfit?
It seems this post is not only on my mind as PleaseMay I was considering the same question yesterday.
I wore the red top and black skirt on Christmas Day in 2008 and the silver dress which was a 2009 Christmas Gift from my husband, on Christmas Day in 2009 and 2010.
And so begins my dilemma.
Skirt and top or dress?
I love getting dressed up and any excuse for a dress is always a good bet in my book.
However, this year I have Christmas Day for 9, maybe 10 guests to prepare for.
As I am only 5ft and half an inch flat shoes are out as I look as if I have escaped from the local pantomime when the photographs are taken.
And that's the thing - Christmas Day is one of the most photographed days of the year so it has to be right.
What is your perfect Christmas Day outfit?

The Red Blouse

This is the same blouse I have in orange and blue.
I can't believe Tesco has managed to create such an array of must-have colours for the budget range of blouses.
I was saving this to wear on Christmas Day with my black pencil skirt.
But oh dear, the skirt is a tad too tight.
Instead I opted for a more forgiving flared skirt and will get back to Weight Watchers in the New Year.
Christmas is far too enjoyable to be worrying about limiting your treats.
Still, I am making the effort as I was at the gym before 9am today.

A meal out with friends and absolutely nothing to wear.
In the back of my wardrobe I found this orange top from Primark and pinched my daughter's new skirt which she bought from Oasis for The Clothes Show.
The great thing about this faux leather skirt is that if I spill anything on it, I can wipe it clean.
If only all my clothes were so easy to maintain!

Running late today so had no time to check out an inspiring blog.
Instead, I just dug out some old faithfuls.
It was a lovely last day at work before the Christmas Break.
The students left at 12.15pm and then all the staff were invited into a hot buffet in the refectory followed by the Principal's presentations to the leavers.
I have never felt so valued or part of a team at a workplace before.
After the festivities were over a handful of us made it over the road to the local pub for a farewell drink before I braved the snowy roads to get home.
I am so glad I dressed for comfort today.

Which just goes to show, what looks lovely on one blogger doesn't necessarily work on another and that is why I love blogging - to learn by making mistakes - it is the only effective way of learning.

Laid Back Friday

It's getting colder and as Friday is a non teaching day for me it is the chance to walk around the college and chase up students and other members of staff.
It is also the one day we take a coffee break - myself and the other 9 Progress Coaches take 15 minutes every Friday to enjoy a Starbucks Coffee in the new refectory.
We are an eclectic bunch, aged from 24 to 55. Five of us are qualified teachers, whilst the others have a background in careers, youth work and personnel.
I feel so blessed to have started a new job with 9 other people who all get on so well.
It makes going to work such a joy.
Now if only I felt the same way when it came to pay day.
I suppose you can't have everything!

Unexpected Pleasures

I went to work as normal but by 11am we had to clear the college of students.
High winds had made the roof unsafe and the building had to be empty by 12 noon.
Now, what could I do with a whole five hours to myself that I hadn't planned on?
First stop was a shop to get more scrapbooking supplies after Eek has got me hooked again with the Christmas Journal.
Then it was back home for some lunch, a session of scrapboooking and an hour at the gym.
What a lovely early Christmas Gift - five whole hours to do exactly what I want.
I can't remember the last time that happened.

Hit & Miss

On Sunday we took Ben to Liverpool to find a new guitar.
Santa needed some help so Ben tried out some guitars at his favourite shop.
It was a lovely way to spend a Sunday.
After we had spent a couple of hours in the shop my husband brought Ben home and I continued Christmas shopping alone.
After ticking off gifts from my list I allowed myself the indulgence of shopping in Hit & Miss or H&M as it is better known.
There are two H & M stores in Liverpool and both remind me of a Jumble Sale.
You can, if you look, secure some great finds but generally you have to wade through a lot of rubbish.
I spotted this dress which is the same style as my snakeskin print dress and it is so easy to wear.
For £12.99 I couldn't afford to leave it behind.However, Christmas being Christmas there is a gift for you if you want to snap it up as yesterday it was reduced to £6.49 - check it out here.

I love wearing jeans to work.
When the students are not in college we can wear what we like.
Before the students started college in the summer there were lots of teachers showing off their tans in shorts.
At this time of year it is all about layering to stay warm.
The day was spent sharing good practice.
I picked up some lovely tips on Kung Fu Teaching and using decorated lollysticks for role play.

Strapless Dress To Work Day

One of the best things about winter is that I can wear my red strapless dress during the day.
It is made of a very soft cord and lovely and warm.
It is my favourite winter colour and always cheers me up - even on a Monday morning.

December Will Be Magic Again

I have struggled with the thought of Christmas this year.
It was always the most chaotic time in the calendar with carol services, nativities, drinks, parties and the large family meal.
Not to mention the dawn chorus of "Has he been yet?"
Last year was the first Christmas without my dad.
My mum went to stay with my brother and his family.
And we spent Christmas Day with my sister in law and mother in law at a local restaurant.
This year my mum is going away to my brother's again.
My mother in law who suffers from dementia is now in a home and my sister in law will be spending time with her new boyfriend.
After making Christmas Dinner for up to 14 people, this year there will be just six of us.
Our teenagers will probably stay in bed until lunchtime and be itching to get out with their friends by evening.
As my children are all in High School or university there will be no nativity plays, no Carol Services and no Christmas Meal with the mums who I never see at the school gates anymore.
I was feeling down about Christmas until I read eek's Post about a Christmas Journal.
I used to scrapbook a lot but ran out of time.
I realised that I would have more time this Christmas and that I could put it to good use by remembering Christmases Past in the Christmas Present.
After reading this I began to feel excited about Christmas again and I decided to set up a blog to chronicle the Journal.
My Christmas celebrations began with making some Christmas decorations from an old shirt of my fathers - this was one way I could include him in the Christmas festivities.
I also made a couple for my mother too and she was very touched.
I have no idea how this Christmas will pan out by I believe very strongly that December will be magic again.

Our office takes an age to warm up and I had lots of work to do.

I put this look together after leafing through Kendi's collobaration with Fossil here.
This really is a dress for all occasions.
I have worn it for a wedding, a christening and a funeral.
But never everyday.
When I saw Kendi's Fossil Lookbook I immediately thought of this dress and wore it to brighten up Monday Morning.
I also discovered that there is a Fossil Store in Liverpool too.
I am off Christmas Shopping on Saturday and wonder if I can resist walking through without buying anything.

These Boots Were Made For Walking............

Another ebay-funded purchase - my new Clarks Boots.
I wanted flat, black and patent and bingo, these boots were just waiting for me on the Clarks website.
With a 20% discount code they were just about affordable.
I have worn them a couple of times and my colleague was convinced they were from Russell and Bromley.
But even better than that - they are so comfortable to walk in.
Last night my husband and I attended the Christmas Lights switch-on in our village followed by an Indian meal.
We walked to the village and back, a round trip of about three miles, and it felt like I was wearing slippers.

I know it is a long way off but I have just booked our holiday for next summer.
Yet again we are going back to Spain and another campsite on the outskirts of Barcelona.
I just love the city and every time I go I discover something new.

A Dull November Monday Morning

I am determined to keep up a full working week's worth of clothes.
After a year off to study for my postgraduate teaching certificate and several months sporadic posting due to the start of my new job I finally feel ready to commit to daily blogging again.
I have tried to pop up and leave comments on my favourite blogs but even that got too much with my heavy workload.
I apologise and now I feel more settled I will endeavour to return to the halcyon days of daily blogging and regular communication with my fellow bloggers.
I have missed you all.
I am starting today with a rust polka dot dress I bought while shopping at my local supermarket.
It s a tad too long but it is ideal for work as the material never creases and the colour is always ready to brighten up a dull November Monday morning.

I wear this skirt when I want to feel a bit of luxury.
The fabric is incredible - a very thick cotton and the skirt is lined.
Although it is a little on the short side the winter means I can dig out the black tights and boots.

Nina' s Blouse

When I say share - I mean I have my own and Nina has hers.

As Nina is a foot taller and a stone lighter the blouse looks very different on both of us.

French Night

It was time to meet up with some old friends.
And time to get back into the kitchen and start cooking from scratch again.
As three of us were vegetarians the meal was French-inspired: French Onion Soup followed by Vegan Cassoulet and Tarte Tatin.
AS it was a bit on the chilly side I dug out my red cord strapless dress.
It is an odd combination but on the right day the dress is perfect.

The high waist seems to cut me in half.

I know, I know.
I have been struggling to keep up with my blog.
This new job is sooo hard.
I do hope to resume a normal service soon.
The past few days were spent in London staying with friends.
We visited Thorpe Park, Central London and Box Hill.
It was great to share some family time together.
We stayed with the family we met on holiday in 2008.
Every year since then we have booked our summer holidays together and met up in Spain.
We shared some more memories until next summer.

apart from a black polo?

I bought this skirt from Tesco the other day when I was shopping.
I love it, but whatever I pair it with it doesn't seem right.
I hate black polo /roll necks as they drain the colour from my face.
Blouses never fit as they gape too much at the chest.
I am wishing I hadn't torn off the label even though I do love the skirt.
Any suggestions you stylists out there?

Crazy

My new job has been crazy.
Absolutely crazy.
I have a pastoral role at a sixth form college and I have 167 students in 7 tutor groups to take care of.
I teach 14 45 minute sessions a week and spend the rest of the time conducting 121 interviews with the students and helping the second years with their university applications.
And on top of all that we had two Parents' Evening last week.
So that is my excuse for not posting for a while.
I did manage two outfit pictures though.And honestly - I will try harder next week.

Capsule Wardrobe Challenge Postponed

I apologise for the dearth of posts and comments but life has been full-on with family and my new job.
I have managed to flick around and catch up with everyone on my blog roll but I am sorry if I haven't left a comment.
For the next few weeks I need to focus on my work and have decided to post a weekly round-up instead of a daily post.
As for the questions about Roofball - it is a game where between two and as many players as you want take it in turns to hit a ball with their hand onto a roof and let it bounce back onto the floor.
The idea is you have to hit the ball on the roof within one bounce.
When there are many players each player takes a turn.
Each player has five lives and when they have used them all up they are out.
I do hope to create a new Capsule Wardrobe Challenge before Christmas but please bear with me.

A Bank Holiday of Beaches, Blue Skies & Roofball

Our Bank Holiday was wonderful.
We went to stay with my husband's sister and her family.
They have a lovely house in South Wales overlooking the sea.
This is the view I woke up to every morning.
We enjoyed long lazy lunches, rugby, coastal walks and my husband even won the Veteran's Roofball Championships.
Perfect.

Apologies for the absence of posts but new job, family returning from holiday and off again to Wales for the Bank Holiday meant very little time.
This is my outfit for day four of my new job - enrolment day.
Nearly 900 new students attended the college on this day to enrol.
It was lovey to share in the happiness of achievement that these young people were feeling today.
Many had their parents with them and you could feel the pride and relief.
My son's GCSE results also came today and while I won't publish his grades I will say we were very happy too.
He has decided to remain at his school rather than study at a sixth form centre.
He will be studying A-levels in Maths, Physics, PE and Product Design.

Smart Casual

So, the dress code at my new place of work is smart/casual.
However, when the students are not in college then anything goes - jeans, shorts - as long as it is decent.
How cool is that?
While the senior management team tend to wear suits whether the students are in or not, I have no aspirations in that area.
My official title is Progress Coach.
It is a new role and there are 10 of us who have all started together.
Everyone seems very friendly and so far it seems a happy place to work.
Today, we met the rest of the staff as the teachers returned.
Tomorrow we will be helping enrol students once they have collected their GCSE results.
I can't wait to start meeting the students I will be working with.
I have been told that from now to Christmas will be the hardest term - getting to know all my students, chasing UCAS forms and writing UCAS references.
But, it can't be harder than last year with the PGCE, can it?

The Holiday is all over for another year.
Barcelona was as wonderful as ever.
And hot - hotter than the last five times I have been there in August.
I had to fly home alone - three days earlier than the rest of my family who are still sunning themselves as I started my new job today.
I had this little black polka dot number hanging in my closet to help heal the post-holiday blues.
I have wanted a black polka dot dress ever since I saw Lorena and named her winner of the first Capsule Wardrobe Contest in 2008 .

So Can Leggings Really Reduce Cellulite?

So my experiment is over.
I have worn my Lytess leggings 6 days a week for 3 weeks and at least 8 hours a day.
Before I answer the question let me explain why I conducted the experiment.
Over the past year while I have been back at uni I have put on a little extra weight.
Poor eating habits in order to meet deadlines and lack of exercise has seen my weight creep up to the highest post-baby weight for a decade.
The big problem area was hips and thighs.
I read about the Lytess leggings in an article and researched them a little more here.
They promised to reduce inches from my troublesome spots.
I have to confess I don't normally fall for these gimmicks but I was desperate with holidays just a few weeks away.
I decided not to measure as I have also been attending 3 body conditioning exercise classes and run 12 miles a week.
Instead, I decided to focus on the skin tone.
On that basis alone I would say my thighs are smoother and the cellulite has reduced.
Yet, had I lavished cheaper and more loving care with skin brushing, exfoiliating and moisturising I daresay I would have had the same effect.
So in effect I would say think carefully before you part with the best part of £50.
However, there has been one big plus - before the experiment I didn't think I could wear leggings.
Over the past few weeks I haven't exactly fallen in love with them but they have allowed me to wear some of my shorter clothes and in the future they will be an occasional addition to my casual wardrobe.

I picked up this dress from a little shop near the university where I studies.
Obviously it is far too short to wear without tights so these leggings gave me a summer's lease on the dress without having to wear thick tights.
Maybe I am not as bored as I thought of leggings.

This is another top I regularly find in my daughter's wardrobe although I am never sure why as it seems a bit middle-aged for her.
It was a bargain buy from Marks and Spencer's for a fiver.
The great thing about the top is that it is a wash and go one - no need to iron which is why I don't protest too much about finding it screwed up in the bottom of her wardrobe!

I always thought my legs looked like stuffed sausages in leggings - especially when combined with flat shoes.

Holiday Capsule - A Work In Progress

I am putting together my holiday capsule and here is the story so far.
We are going back to the same campsite we stayed at last year near Barcelona.
Our days are spent walking along the beach, lazing by the pool, long lunches, the odd sight-seeing trip and generally chilling out.
I usually start my day with a run and my running kit is carried in my hand luggage.
The evenings are spent socialising with the children and the friends we have made over the years.
This sometimes includes a beach picnic, games of table tennis and lots of card games.
I know my wardrobe is dress-heavy but separates always seem so fussy and hot.
My holiday will be 10 days as I have to fly home early to start my new job.

A Pledge

I have decided that September will herald a turning point in my wardrobe.
I pledge to edit my wardrobe leaving only clothes that make me feel and look fabulous.
I also pledge to only buy what I really need to build on my existing wardrobe.
I will change the habit of a lifetime and go for quality not quantity.
I will buy no more frivolous items because they looked OK but were cheap.
Everything must work with my wardrobe and with me.
When I return from my holiday I will cull my wardrobe and divide the spoils between charity shops and selling on eBay.
Meanwhile here is one of those OK but cheap buys that make up the mainstay of my existing wardrobe.
This £3 tunic from Primark is OK but not fantastic.
At least it works with the leggings.
Oh, and my final pledge is NEVER to wear leggings EVER, EVER again!

A Blue Day

This dress comes from my new holiday wardrobe.
It's a French Connection dress I bought in the sale when I went shopping with my daughter recently.
My daughter encouraged me to buy it.
To be honest I didn't need another holiday dress but as it was 70% off I decided to buy it because I did love it.I think it works well with leggings and will work with flat shoes and heels.
I absolutely love the button detail on the waistline and the fabric is a kind of cheesecloth that will not crumple in my suitcase.
I think this may turn out to be one of my holiday heroes.

Like Mother Like Daughter

There was an interesting feature in the Daily Mail yesterday about mothers and daughters sharing clothes.
It made me smile.
My daughter has been raiding my wardrobe for nearly two years now and she is 14.
I am a UK10 and Briony is a UK8. She is a few cms taller than me and has slightly bigger feet which means our wardrobes are interchangeable.
The other week we bought our first shared item - a Top Shop maxi skirt.
I couldn't justify spending £40 on a skirt but with my NUS student discount and the fact that it would be used in two wardrobes seemed to justify the spend.
Amazingly, the light has changed the skirt from red to coral but the real colour is somewhere between these two pictures.
I think Briony looks much better in it than me but it is very useful for covering up those damned leggings on a night out!

My husband was not impressed when I went to bed in my leggings last night.
"What are these?" he asked.
I was forced to confess my leggings experiment and to say that to make them work I needed to wear them for eight hours a day and as I hadn't put them on until 4pm (due to taking youngest to see new Harry Potter film) I needed another few hours in them.
He was not impressed.
I took them off.
If my legs don't look like Jennifer Aniston's then it will all be his fault!

Skirting The Issue of Leggings

I am still playing with leggings and have been looking around the blogsphere for some advice.
Imogen supplied the best advice I could find although any suggestions would be gratefully received.
I have to wear these leggings for 21 days (minimum 8 hours a day) with only a 3 day break for maximum effect.
As I am short and rather well padded in the legs department I don't want to wear them under trousers or jeans.
I could have tried wearing them under a maxi dress but as I am trying to clean up the house this was not practicable.
Last time I wore this skirt was here on holiday in Barcelona.
Maybe it is one way of getting in the holiday mood.

Potted Plants

Today I spent a few hours potting some plants that I had bought months ago.
I am sure this influenced my choice of dress with its splashes of pink.
There will be an excess of dresses with leggings for the next few weeks as I am trying out these to see if they work for my holiday.
They are supposed to get rid of cellulite and help you lose weight.
I know I must be mad but there are just a few weeks to go.
I will keep you posted on their effectiveness but already I am BORED with black leggings.

The Last Supper

Tonight was a final a farewell for the mums at my son's primary school.
For 16 years I have walked down the same path to my children's primary school.
But last Friday marked the final day.
My youngest son was leaving primary school.
The last one.
My eldest son who will be 20 in September led the way when he was four.
Where did the time go?
I know I will see some of the mums again but never again will we all be part of that same group.
Although most of the children will be starting the same High School I know from experience that they will make new friends and there is not the same parental involvement at High School.
I will miss the teachers, the grounds, the annual events such as The Gala, the Nativity Plays and special assemblies and the friendly receptionist who always had a smile for the harassed mum turning up with forgotten dinner money, trainers and inhalers.
I do hold a tiny hope that I will return one day.
My eldest son is training to be a primary school teacher and maybe, just maybe he will end up there.
And then there is always the grand-children.
But back to the glamour of the final farewell.
It had to be a dressy event.
I live in WAG-land where it is not unusual to see Steven Gerrard or Joe Cole in our local restaurant.
Although wisely they stayed away tonight.
It was 2 for 1 Cocktails so the Pina Colada certainly took the edge off the sadness.

The Secret To My Dream Job

The past year has been a challenge in more ways than one.
The course has been difficult, life has been difficult and finding a job even more difficult.
I have to be honest and admit that by January I realised I didn't want to teach English in schools.
But I kept plodding on.
I felt I owed it to my family who had supported me throughout the course to apply for jobs.
I have never struggled to get a job before.
I have walked into almost every job I have ever gone after.
I was shocked to find my letters of application ignored.
I thought my past life and work must count for something.
Yet deep down.
If I am totally honest - I don't think I was a great secondary school teacher.
By March I had begun my second school placement and it was tough.
Don't get me wrong; the school was brilliant.
I just didn't feel up to the job.
My confidence dipped.
For the first time in my life I felt old and washed up.
Then I was clearing my desk and I found a necklace I had won on Boutique Girl's blog.
It was a Make A Wish necklace.
I had been saving it for a time when I really needed a wish to come true.
Now was the time.
I opened the box and there was a tiny silver angel with some pink thread which clasped around the neck.
I decided to give it a try.
What did I have to lose?
I put the necklace on and made a wish to find the perfect job for me.
I began to settle into the school.
I loved being a tutor and I loved teaching PSHE (Personal, Social & Health Education).
My class of 13-14-year-olds enjoyed their lessons but said they wanted to do more feel-good lessons as they'd had enough of sex and drugs and runaways!
I introduced a Happiness Project and challenged each pupil to create their own Happiness Project for the last lesson of my placement.
The lesson was the best ever with collages, videos, letters, playlists and random acts of kindness collated.
Meanwhile, I ploughed on with the job applications and started to get a few interviews.
In May I had two interviews for teaching jobs in two weeks and was devastated when I was not offered a job.
Then I was called for an interview as a Progress Coach at a sixth form college.
This was a new role at the college and there would be nine coaches starting the term in September.
Over 70 people had applied for the jobs including teachers, lecturers, career tutors, librarians and many more.
It was the only non-teaching job I had applied for but I loved the look of it.
I would be a personal tutor, mentor and teach life skills.
The application included a task to find out how I would deal with challenging situations facing a couple of imaginary students.
A month after applying for the job I was asked back for another test.
I had to write a University reference for a student.
A week later I was called back to the final stage.
I had to give a presentation on Life After College for Year 12 students (aged 16-17); lead a discussion between sixth formers; calm an irate student down in a role-play situation and finally, the panel interview.
I was told I would have to wait until the following week to hear if I had the job as they were still interviewing.
That final stage almost wiped me out but when I returned home that night I was enjoying a glass of wine when I felt my neck and the charm had gone.
The string had snapped on my Make A Wish bracelet which was the sign that my wish would be granted.
Two days later I got a phone call to say I had been selected for the job.
I am so grateful for the gift and in absolutely no doubt that the necklace from Boutique Girl granted my wish.

Graduation Day

Graduation Day at last.
During the long months of planning and teaching and lectures and assignments, I had this date in mind.
It drew a line underneath the hours of family time that had been lost to my studies.
I wanted to celebrate with a big family meal.
As I explained, I missed the graduation ceremony as I opted to attend my son's Leavers' Mass instead.
However, the graduation celebrations took place as planned.
My mum bought my a wonderful bouquet of flowers and made me a lovely card.
My mum, husband, children and my eldest son's girlfriend enjoyed a wonderful meal followed by drinks with friends in one of our local restaurants.
It was everything I had hoped for and more as we all graduate to a new stage in our lives.
Tomorrow I will explain a little more about my job and the amazing gift I received from a fellow blogger that helped my secure a dream job.

Almost Ready To Come Back

My course is finally over and I am so looking forward to catching up with you all again.
I have missed you.
I am now a fully qualified English teacher but.........
I will not be working as an English teacher.
One thing I learned from the course is that I do not want to be an English teacher.
But the experience has been so worthwhile as I have a wonderful new job to look forward to in September.
I will be working as a Progress Coach at a sixth form college.
It is a fantastic college with around 2,000 students and I will be working with the teachers there to make sure that each and every one of the students in my cohort fulfill their potential.
I can hardly wait.
It is a term-time only job which means I will have some spare time to write.
The past year has been a challenging one with the loss of my wonderful father but there is still so much to look forward to.
Tomorrow should be my graduation and I was hoping to post a picture here but it clashed with my son's Leavers' Mass.
Both events were scheduled for 2pm.
Can you believe it?
Of course there is no contest.
I cannot miss my son playing "The Lazy Song" on his electric guitar.
So here we are raising our glasses to a bright new future.
Both of us will be starting brand new schools and fantastic new adventures in September.
See you all very soon when a normal service will be resumed!

The Fourth Annual International Capsule Wardrobe Challenge drew contenders from across the globe.
Fourteen of us worked our wardrobes to the max to create an admirable assortment of collections.

Day Five and still so many possibilities.
I haven't worn the black ballet shoes or used the dress as a skirt with the Zara blouse.
I would carry on but for the fact that it is my birthday tomorrow and I have a new outfit in mind.

Almost a repeat of day one but the smart jacket rings the changes.
Off to the university library now to make a start on writing up my research project.
Not looking forward to wading through the Harvard referencing and identifying the methodology for my research.
It is like learning a new language.
Still it will all be worth it when I get my Masters.

It's Granny's birthday today and we are all going out to lunch.
Granny is my mother in law and she will be celebrating her 83rd birthday.
Three of her five children will be there which will be nice.
The last time all of her children were together was in 2008 for her 80th birthday.
Today I added three more accessories - the bag, the belt and the scarf.

An easy day at home today.
I had forgotten how lovely it feels to go for a morning run.
Although it is only February I can feel spring in the air.
Today will be spent taking it easy with my children who are off school, some baking perhaps and maybe a little peek at my research project which I will have to start tomorrow.
Today also sees the addition of two of my five accessories:
The necklace from Next and the gold hoop ear-rings.

My Capsule Feb 14th - Feb 18th

And here we are again.
I know my wardrobe is not very imaginative this time but I plead academic woes.
This week I am not teaching but have to write up my research project as part of my PGCE studies.
For those who are interested, my project was to test the theory that an author visit can raise literacy skills equivalent to a term's work.
In order to do this I have had to mark two sets of papers - one before an author visit and one after.
I have also had to compile a literature review and some research stuff that I am still not too sure about.
It will mean lots of hot vimto, screwed up pieces of paper and night-time visits to the university library to get it done.
I need to be warm, comfortable and dressed quickly.

So here it is.
